(Source FHCM/DNMAG) / updated January 2022

Since July 1st 2017, the French Federation of couture, ready-to-wear fashion designers and designers is now called: Federation of haute couture and fashion, more concise formula, leaving aside until its French nationality. By definition, indeed, the “haute couture” is French, since it is a specificity of the Hexagon via this name legally protected.

The Federation of Haute Couture and Fashion is currently headed by Puig Group Fashion Division President Ralph Toledano (President) and Pascal Morand (Executive Chairman).

Founded in 1973, it brings together the Chambre syndicale de la haute couture, to which belong fifteen or so houses benefiting from the haute couture label, the Chambre syndicale du prêt-à-porter for couturiers and fashion designers, grouping houses and women’s ready-to-wear designers, and the Chambre Syndicale de la Mode Hommes, bringing together the major brands with a male fashion business.

What does haute couture mean?

What is haute couture? (click here to unfold)
What is haute couture? Initially, haute couture was the means of launching the luxury industry. She originally played the role of avant-garde and that the parades exposed the fashion trends. Currently, it is a showcase that displays the know-how of the workshops, brings a brand image, contributes to the prestige and influence of the fashion house. Haute couture consists of selling lines of ready-to-wear, cosmetics, accessories, perfumes and glasses and expanding its clientele. However, haute couture is tailor-made clothing. However, it is essential to respect very strict rules to become members of haute couture.
The criteria for choosing members? (click here to unfold)
There are 3 types of haute couture members: permanent members, corresponding members and guest members. To become one of these members it is necessary to meet certain numbers of conditions. First of all, their creations must be made by hand, in a fashion house whose workshop should be composed of at least 20 people. Then, their fashion houses must parade at least twice a year and present at least 25 models at each passage. And finally, they must be listed for at least 4 years in the official couture collection calendar and must also be sponsored by another couture house.
The differences between permanent, correspondent and guest members (click here to unfold)
Members of haute couture indeed relate to the haute couture houses participating in the parade. To start its participation in haute couture, you will have to go through the status of guest members. It is a transitional status to become an expert in haute couture. After 4 years, you will be passed on as a permanent member. It is the member who really possesses the appellation of Haute Couture. These members are still listed in the official calendar. And finally, the corresponding member is a foreign haute couture member.
