Guo Pei Autumn Winter 2020/21 Savannah / Online Fashion Show
Guo Pei’s Autumn/Winter 2020 collection is inspired by the mystical African grasslands.
Here, the original landscapes of Earth are preserved. Nature’s law of survival, migration and procreation remain untainted. The designer draws upon this invigorating life force, composing a concerto to nature’s rhythm, celebrating the tenacity of life.
For this 10th show, I am exploring the theme of Life. I envision images of vast Savannah grasslands where plants flourish and animals thrive with the arrival of the rainy season. Cheetahs are hunting, giraffes are grazing while a herd of zebras strolls by . Here, the laws of nature prevail, untainted. During this time when the world faces the challenges of a global health crisis, I find myself delving deeper into my perception and feelings towards Life. Through my collections, I wish to express my feelings of the connection between life and landscape and the relationship between man and nature. – Guo Pei
Collection highlights: #1 – Use of Piñatex
Inspired by nature and traditional weaving techniques from the Philippines, Piñatex is a natural leather alternative made from cellulose fibres extracted from pineapple leaves.
Collection highlights: #2 – Sustainability
Haute couture possesses a wealth of levels and connotations, amongst the most influential of which are its long-lasting charm and the value of its heritage. It is precisely this pursuit of perfection that gives haute couture its outstanding sustainability; even in this age of fast fashion, its uniqueness is a beacon of brilliance.
The source of this sustainability lies not only in its exquisite designs but also the inheritance of innovation and craftsmanship that it embodies. In her 10th Couture Collection, SAVANNAH, Guo Pei has elegantly fused the spirit of nature with exquisite artistry.
Collection highlights: #3 – Design with felt
With a history stretching back thousands of years, felt is the oldest textile in recorded history.
For this collection, Guo Pei has chosen this non-knitted fabric in order to get as close as possible to the feel and emotions of nature.
The felt’s simple texture complements the intricate and consummate embroidery, and haute couture’s artistic techniques sincerely reproduce the majestic and tenacious landscapes of the savannah – added together, these elements open up an exquisitely moving dialogue that is filled with passion.
Collection highlights: #4 – Transformation process
A manual method that creates textures sculptured by needlework with distinct three-dimensional spaces overlaid onto two-dimensional fabrics.
This gives the pieces in this collection an extremely expressive profile and structure, which creates magnificent visual effects and conveys Guo Pei’s exploratory meditations on life.

More about Guo Pei’s Fall/Winter 2020 – Savannah collection
The fabric, Piñatex features prominently in this collection. Combining rich natural resources and traditional Filipino weaving techniques, Piñatex fabrics are made from plant fibers of pineapple leaves. The designer chose the fusion of this naturally sourced material put together by manual craft to once again, explore sustainable fashion. Elephant grey and white, neutrals, serve as supports for the two colours that symbolize the veins of life – the passionate red and the dreamy blue. Evocation of our life, sometimes calm, sometimes exhilarating, in a dimension between dream and reality.
As a substitute for natural leather, Piñatex fabrics have an excellent crisp texture, providing unlimited possibilities for the construction of modern silhouettes. Using outward-folded edges, three-dimensional geometric cross-sections and exaggerated circular arcs, Guo Pei boldly uses deconstructed cuts to interpret simple lines and structured silhouettes.
Through contemporary styles of neatly-cut coats, classic suits and A-shaped skirts, Guo Pei portrays the independence and liberal spirit of today’s women.
Contrasting with the structural silhouettes are hand embroidered, graceful animal motifs such as cheetahs, giraffes and zebras. The elegant neck curve of the giraffe, the mesmerizing stipes of the zebra, the sturdy limbs of the elephant, blended into the movement of the garments, as if ready for a modern urban adventure. Puffy sleeves adorned with zebras and elephant trunks innovatively conveys the affinity between nature and fashion.
The principles of sustainable fashion are also reflected in the craftsmanship in this collection. The texture of traditional handcrafted sheep wool felt is creatively blended with intricate embroidery, like a lively dialogue – intense yet delicate…a romantic representation of the grandiosity of the savanna grassland.
Guo Pei Autumn/Winter 2020 collection transports one from urban life to the primitive and vast fields of Savannah, embracing the essence of life in its primal and true form.
