Sunday 3rd March 2019 rue de Rivoli

A shoe collection has to include many many options, but not look as if it’s a mess, A shoe collection has to recognise that variations are essential from day to night from town to country and from dreamy beauty to real practicality.

On every one of these counts Tabitha Simmons succeeded beautifully, indeed I wish several of the designs would run into my size. Let’s start with the practical and what is better then a neat ankle boot with a double buckle fastening in liquorice black leather or leopardskin, stunning over the knee boots fit for any musketeer, and stout grille walking boots or snug shearling bootees.

You could go from a long country walk along leafy lanes in the manner of one of the Mitford sisters, you could be having a smart lunch in Mayfair with Cecil Beaton or you could be wielding a rapier in a duel with Milady De Winter; Tabitha provides a suitable boot for all foreseeable occasions.

To be honest every design of each individual pair of shoes, for me, told a fascinating story. A pair of almond toed shoes with shell pink leather forming a cutout and strap which looked to me to have been inspired by The Duchess of Windsor, some multi strapped cut away bootettes whose pedigree seems to me to be the great Edwardian star Lily Elsie, and a superb range of decoratively punched suede low cut court shoes which seemed ready for a couture salon and deep pile carpet. Perhaps tea at The Ritz?

The pointed toe kitten heel sling backs paid homage to the brilliant shoes of that great British shoe designer Edward Rayne. However the pair I wanted for me were flat black pumps with a soft huge flat bow across the front, I could imagine Voltaire wearing them whilst writing. In the end every pair of shoes seemed to tell a story, and a lot of very different narratives, gathering inspiration from across the centuries but remaining resolutely modern and of today.

Shoes designed and made by a storyteller as much as a designer.
